Money as Art
Kamiel Proost’s Money Art raises the question, “Can defacing US currency be considered an art form?” According to one of Google’s researchers, it is definitely a crime. But Proost isn’t the only one trying to make a statement with money. Dean Bracy decided to write the following message on 20,000 dollar bills:
Where does a dollar go? Send me a postcard. ddB, Rte. 1, Box 282, Highlandville, MO 65669. Have a great day!
Back in 2001, over 3,500 people responded, which makes you wonder what the number is up to now.

I saw this documentary about an artist who copies dollar bills by hand then uses them to buy something. He explains that this is his artwork and if it is worth to pay for the stuff. What happen then is (without the vendor knowing), when a vendor accepts the artwork, collectors flock to purchase the piece for large amount of money. The artist exhibits in the gallery the documented transactions between collectors and vendors. I can’t really remember the name of the artist… or the film.
Such a great idea. I’m always amazed by these kinds of concepts. I mean, everybody could come up with an idea like this. Besides it is interesting to see and hear where your money is actually going. Too bad our smallest paper bill is around 5 euro,s instead of one.
