Adapting

adapting

I’ve been devoted to my nightly ritual of having a cup of tea while reading the Taoism thought of the day the past couple of nights, but nothing profound has stood out to me to comment on until today. The lesson here is one that I have often mastered at times, but within reason. There are times such as now that I struggle with adapting to my circumstances. It’s probably something all of us have dealt with at one point or another. Accepting changes whether small or large can sometimes be difficult. But putting up resistance typically only offers one more grief than relief. Thus, the challenge become discovering a way to adapt.

In today’s Taoism thought of the day, it uses the metaphor of how the sky is constantly changing to adapt to the horizon. Whether it’s skyscrapers in New York City or the flat lands of Kansas…the sky changes and molds itself as part of the landscape. Which would lead one to believe that the sky is passive, simply a background to its surroundings. However, if you can translate that to your daily life, you might start to see the implications. The ability to adapt no matter what the circumstance, while extremely challenging, can be extremely powerful. If you are willing to adapt to your surrounding, be flexible in your thinking…you are in essence mastering one of the secrets of Tao.
