“Match”…created for this week’s theme at Illustration Friday…in dedication to my dear friend, Shannon, whom I always discuss about hanging out with, but it seems that the only time we hook up is when I show art or she plays with her band, The Seahorse Orchestra.

The common question that we always seem to get is an inquiry if we’re somewhat related. I guess two red heads that look bound and determined to take over the world aren’t always a normal commodity in most crowds. So I guess you could say we stick out…

So here’s to you, Shannon…may you always continue to embrace the world in all its shimmery glory…cheers!

  1. I, too, am a redhead (woo-hoo!) and just read “Roots of Desire”–a book about the history of red hair. It was a bit disconcerting until I got to the part that said “All redheads kick ass!”. Now that’s what I like to hear–so keep kickin’ some!

  2. I love the colours you’ve used here, they really stand out.

  3. I’m honored! Yes, it is strange all the “sister” comments, no? We’ll have to play tricks on people, it would be too easy. ;) I definitely do want to get together, honestly - not having a car right now is somewhat embarrassing to me. I can be ridiculously proud sometimes (when it makes no sense). If you don’t mind carting me around (and something free), we can think of something! When there’s a witch, there’s a way.. I mean will! … yea.

I need to ask Brian what he knows about Lobster mushrooms. I saw something on a cooking show and became very intruiged, immediately thinking this is something to ask the expert about!

  4. My husband and I also both have reddish hair and freckles, and we often get asked if we’re related (only by marriage!). And our daughter…guess what colour hair she has? So: here’s to redheads taking over the world! ;-)
I love the organic patterns in this, and the contrasting green and rust colours. Lovely.

  5. Okay… The whole lobster mushroom thingy is a tad complex…

See, the lobster mushroom is actually one fungus that is devouring another mushroom, two species in one fruiting body! They are generally white inside, the white part being one of a few different edible species.. The red skin, on the outside, which makes it look similar to lobster flesh, is actually a species of parasite that is stealing nutrients from the first species mycelial network.

Sound confusing yet? Okay, its gonna get worse. Hehe..

Theoretically, the parasitic fungus, (species is called hypomyces) could infect poisonous mushrooms, but its pretty selective and generally attacks mushrooms that are edible by humans.

Edible, but generally not palatable. Some are too bitter, and some are super hot. But the magic is that when the parasite fungus infect the host, it destroys much of what makes the mushroom unpalatable and suddenly turning it into a gourmet mushroom, with an unparalelled taste. There are even some that smell and taste like orange concentrate.

I could ask around and get us some through a porcini purveyor, they are supposed to be expensive but I can see if I can’t wrangle some for free, muhahahaha!

Yeah, and I do know too much about food. Hehehe.

  6. Beautiful!!!
